Freeze warnings, frost advisories and cold weather advisories from the National Weather Service (NWS) were in place for 18 counties in California early on Wednesday morning.
Why It Matters
The NWS warned that cold conditions could present a hazard to sensitive populations, such as those without homes. Small children and older adults are also at risk from cold weather.
The NWS said cold conditions “can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.”
It also said freeze conditions “could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.”
What To Know
At the time of writing, freeze warnings had been put in place for parts of Kern County, Tulare County, Kings County, Fresno County, Madera County, Merced County, Santa Clara County, San Benito County and Monterey County.
Frost advisories were in effect in Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma and Napa Counties.
Meanwhile, Lake and Mendocino Counties had cold weather advisories in place.
The NWS said sub-freezing temperatures as low as 29 degrees were expected in San Joaquin Valley.
Similarly, cold temperatures were also forecast for Ojai Valley as well as Calabasas and Agoura Hills.
“Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the NWS said.
Freeze warnings are issued when “significant, widespread freezing temperatures are expected,” while a frost advisory “means areas of frost are expected or occurring, posing a threat to sensitive vegetation,” the service says.
The NWS for Eureka, California, said temperatures between 27 and 32 degrees were expected in valley locations in Southern Mendocino County Interior and Southern Lake County.
It warned that extended exposure to below-freezing temperatures can result in frostbite.
