Former pop star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has been ordered by a high court judge to pay over £500,000 in damages to one of the women he abused. This follows his 2015 conviction for abusing the claimant and two other minors between 1975 and 1980.The claimant previously secured a “default judgment” on Gadd’s liability, and on Tuesday, Mrs. Justice Tipples awarded her £508,800 in damages, plus approximately £84,000 in interest. Gadd did not attend the hearing nor was he represented, as he has not engaged with the civil case.In her 13-page ruling, Tipples highlighted the severe impact of the abuse on the then 12-year-old victim, noting the significant adverse effect on her life. The judge detailed the abuse, including rape, sexual assault, humiliation, and coercive control, leading the victim to extreme self-harm in her distress. The damages include £381,000 for lost earnings and £7,800 for future therapy. Richard Scorer, the head of abuse law at Slater and Gordon representing the claimant, emphasized the court’s acknowledgment of the abuse’s devastating impact. He criticized Gadd’s lack of remorse and commitment to pursuing payment. The court heard that the abuse severely affected the claimant’s education, work, and personal relationships. Gadd was jailed for 16 years in 2015 and released last year, only to be re-imprisoned for breaching his license conditions.A parole hearing in January denied his release, citing his continued lack of victim empathy and refusal to engage in rehabilitation programs. Gadd’s sentence expires in February 2031.
