In the 11th hour Genesis Health System and United Healthcare have come to an agreement to allow patients to continue to access in-network hospitals, doctors and specialists.
The news comes just days before the June 30 deadline when the current contract between the two was set to expire.
“Our goal always is to avoid disruptions for patients,” said Jordan Voigt, president of Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, and MercyOne interim Eastern Iowa Division President. “This agreement was necessary to ensure Genesis can continue delivering the high-quality, affordable care people need. With fair reimbursement, we can continue to invest in our colleagues, medical staff, innovative treatments and important health programs, protecting access to care now and in the future.”
Patients who receive health insurance coverage through UnitedHealthcare should contact UnitedHealthcare directly using the number on the back of their insurance card with any questions about their coverage or benefits.

The agreement comes at a crucial time as the two were locked in a battle for the past month. If the contract was not renewed, Genesis’ patients would have been at risk of losing their current providers and hospitals.
On a website set up by United Healthcare to provide information in the interim, the insurance company blamed MercyOne for “demanding significant price hikes for our employer-sponsored and Medicare Advantage health plans that would increase health care costs by $42 million over the next three years.”
Genesis, which completed its merger with MercyOne last year, countered United Healthcare’s claims on a website of its own. Genesis put the blame for price hikes on United Healthcare, further stating United has shared “inaccurate and misleading information.”
“Health insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, are posting record-breaking profits for shareholders, while we are expected to cover gaps. UnitedHealthGroup, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, made more than $22 billion in 2023 alone. Genesis cannot continue to do more with less,” the statement read.
