BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Hurricane Beryl is already ripping through the Caribbean, heading toward Jamaica now.
The Caribbean Islands are hot destinations for the summer so we’re on your side, sharing the best way to protect your vacation and your money during hurricane season.
Clay Ingram, spokesperson with AAA Alabama, was on vacation in the Punta Cana area of the Dominican Republic when the storm passed.
He said on Tuesday the beaches were closed but he was able to get some video to share with WBRC.
Of course, some islands are in more danger of this specific storm than others but what if you have a trip coming up in Jamaica or the Cayman Islands?
Ingram said this exact scenario is why it’s a good idea to invest in travel insurance.
Though some hotels or airlines might give your money back for issues with Mother Nature impacting your vacation, it’s not always guaranteed.
Ingram says most people are surprised to find out how affordable travel insurance actually is.
“You know, it’s typically around 8-10% of your overall travel expense,” he explained. “It differs depending on where you’re going, how long you’re gonna be there, and believe it or not, it differs upon the age of the people that are traveling because it includes medical insurance.”
That being said, hurricanes aren’t the only reason a trip might get cancelled.
Ingram said to ensure your vacation and your money is protected, it’s best to get that travel insurance and go through a travel agent who can share their expertise.
