Heavy rainfall in Mumbai has led to multiple flight delays and cancellations, severe flooding in several areas, and the overflow of two major lakes supplying water to the city. A red alert has been issued by the weather office, predicting extremely heavy rainfall until 8:30 am tomorrow.
IndiGo reported that the continuous rain is causing periodic delays in their flight schedules, advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Air India has announced cancellations and diversions of some flights, offering full refunds or a one-time complimentary rescheduling for today’s bookings. SpiceJet also warned of potential disruptions to flight departures and arrivals, urging passengers to monitor their flight status.
The Andheri subway has been closed due to flooding, and areas such as Sion, Chembur, and Andheri have been severely affected. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that Modak-Sagar and Vihar lakes, two of the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai, are overflowing, leading to a 10% cut in the city’s water supply. Areas near Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, including Thane and Pune, are also experiencing severe rain-related issues. In Thane, waterlogging has affected regions like Mumbra, while in Pune, multiple residential complexes in Pimpri Chinchwad are flooded. Three people in Pune have died after being electrocuted while wading through water.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that the administration is alert and that rescue agencies such as the NDRF and SDRF are on standby. He mentioned that the state government is in communication with the Army and will seek their assistance if necessary. “I am closely monitoring the situation. I appeal to Mumbaikars to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary,” Shinde said. He also addressed the situation in Pune, indicating that airlifting of residents would be arranged if needed and reiterated that there is no cause for panic.
