Quarterbacks dominate the preseason odds for 2023 NFL MVP, filling the first 24 spots on the odds list and 29 of the top 30 (Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson is the outlier, and he’s at +10000).
Despite the big names at the top of the list — Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles, even new Jets QB Aaron Rodgers — another player has caught the eye of early MVP bettors:
Chicago Bears signal-caller Justin Fields, who is 11th on the odds list at +2000 (bet $10 to win $210 total) after opening at +3000.
PointsBet and Caesars Sportsbook both reported Fields has gotten the most bets to win MVP.
PointsBet said Fields has received 18.7% of the MVP bets.
PointsBet Senior Editor Max Meyer wrote Fields is receiving “insane action,” receiving more MVP bets than Mahomes, Allen, and Justin Herbert of the Chargers combined.
Caesars Sportsbook reported they have received more MVP bets on Fields than any other player. Fields is Caesars’ second-biggest liability behind Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson, the 2019 MVP.
One bettor from Illinois put down $1,000 on Fields at +4000 (to win $41,000 total) with Caesars in March.
Jackson (1,206 yards in 2019) and Fields (1,143 last season) have the top two rushing seasons for a QB in NFL history. Fields owns the NFL single-game rushing yards record for a QB with 178 on 15 carries against the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 6.

Fields has struggled as a passer in his two seasons, going 351-for-588 passing (59.7%) for 4,112 yards, 24 touchdown passes, 21 interceptions and a 79.7 passer rating.
The No. 11 pick in 2021 is 5-20 as a starter for the Bears. He’s received one MVP vote, and that was a fifth-place vote in 2022.
So why the MVP optimism on Fields despite the Bears coming off a 3-14 season?
Reinforcements have arrived in Chicago, which traded the No. 1 pick in April’s NFL Draft to Carolina for receiver DJ Moore, two first-round picks and three second rounders.
And Fields plays the right position to be an MVP candidate – quarterbacks have won the MVP the past 10 seasons and 15 of the previous 16 years.
