Manipur events truly tragic but opposition’s selective outrage raises questions


The simmering violence and indignities heaped on individuals and communities by fellow citizens in Manipur has, quite naturally, provoked outrage in the rest of the country. That the situation in a once-neglected corner of north-east India has triggered so much interest as to paralyse Parliament and provoke a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government is, perhaps, a testimony to the completeness of India’s political integration.

But this isn’t entirely true. The bludgeoning of electoral democracy and the assault on civil rights during the recent panchayat polls in West Bengal were, for example, expediently airbrushed out of the consciousness of those who delighted in India being pilloried by the European parliament in Brussels.
